Formerly, obtaining permission was a prerequisite for entering specific areas of the Kazakh Altai near the border. This obligation has been rescinded. Currently, a border zone permit is only requisite if your travels take you in close proximity to the Russian and Chinese borders, such as around Mount Belukha or the Rahmanov Springs. Visiting Lake Markakol does not necessitate a border zone permit.

The permit to get into the Baikonur Cosmodrome facilities is issued mainly for package tour customers. For independent visitors to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, you will need a special permit from “Roskosmos” State Corporation on Space Activities, it is obtained in advance and through accredited companies and services. To secure entry, it is imperative to submit an application justifying the purpose of the visit at least 10 days in advance. Additionally, a Russian visa is mandatory for visitors.
