Border Crossing at "Tazhen" Temporarily Suspended Until September 2025 Due to Construction
Kazakhstan has temporarily closed the Tazhen border crossing with Uzbekistan starting February 1, 2025. The checkpoint, which connects the Uzbek city of Nukus with Beyneu and provides a key route to Aktau in Kazakhstan, will remain closed until September 1, 2025.
The closure affects individuals, passenger vehicles, buses, and light cargo transport under 3.5 tons. This decision, made in coordination with Uzbek authorities, is aimed at ensuring public safety and speeding up ongoing construction and renovation works at the site.
From May through August, Kazakhstan will build a new road along the neutral zone between the Tazhen (Kazakhstan) and Daut Ata (Uzbekistan) checkpoints. Similar construction is planned on the Uzbek side as well. Due to the scale of the project, Kazakhstan has proposed extending the border closure until September 1, 2025, a proposal fully supported by Uzbekistan.
Travellers are advised to plan their routes accordingly. However, alternative options remain available: travellers can fly between Nukus and Aktau or take a train via Beyneu to reach Aktau.
