Lenin Peak Group Tour Highlights
Lenin Peak (7,134 m) is a highly regarded goal for climbers seeking the thrill of high-altitude mountaineering. The classic route is free of steep rock and ice sections, and skiing down from the summit of this seven-thousander is an exhilarating experience even for the most adventurous athletes. Its seemingly accessible slopes still hide the real challenges of high altitude: low temperatures, unpredictable weather and ice crevasses, so a successful climb needs careful planning and a responsible approach.
This 20-day group expedition starts and ends in Osh. From Achyk-Tash Base Camp (3,600 m) in the Alay Valley you acclimatize step by step: a walk to a waterfall, a hike to the ridge of Petrovsky Peak (4,000 m), an ascent of Yukhin Peak (5,100 m) or Domashniy Peak (4,700 m) from Camp 1 (4,400 m), glacier training and a first rotation up to Camp 3 (6,100 m) on Razdelnaya Peak. After rest days at Base Camp you climb back up through Camps 1, 2 and 3 for the summit push along the western ridge, over the ice slope called "The Knife" and across the Parachutists' Plateau to the top, where a small bust of Lenin stands. A reserve day allows for bad weather.
To take part you need good physical fitness for sustained effort at altitude, experience with crampons and an ice axe, basic rope travel skills on glaciers and, ideally, previous climbs above 5,000–6,000 m. High-altitude guides (one guide for at most three climbers), the border zone permit, meals at Base Camp and Camp 1 and the installed tents at Camps 2 and 3 are included. Climbing with a guided group of 4–12 participants is not only the safest but also the most cost-effective way to attempt Lenin Peak.
Difficulty: Challenging Basic mountaineering skills are required before you join – walking in crampons, using an ice axe and moving in a rope team across crevassed glaciers; the training during the expedition only refreshes them. Expedition to a 7,134 m summit with fixed ropes on the steepest sections, a 45-degree ice slope below the summit, climbing days of 4–9 hours and nights in tents at up to 6,100 m.

At the camp the camp chief or administrator welcomes you, helps you settle in and gives you all the essential information for your stay.

From Camp 3 you descend to the saddle and climb the steep slope up the wide western ridge of Lenin Peak, keeping to the left side of the ridge as you head toward the summit. After a steep 80-meter ice slope of 45 degrees called "The Knife" and a passage between rocks, the route crosses a vast, gently rolling snowfield called the "Parachutists' Plateau" and reaches the rocky hills around the summit. There are no clear landmarks here, and in poor visibility it is easy to get lost. A small bust of Lenin stands on the summit. Important safety rule: if you have not reached the summit by 2:00 PM, you must turn back immediately and descend to the summit camp.

Before you join: mountaineering experience
Basic mountaineering experience is essential for the Lenin Peak expedition. Before joining, you should already know how to walk in crampons, use an ice axe and travel safely in a rope team across glaciers and crevassed terrain.
The acclimatization days include practical training, but the program is not designed to teach these skills from scratch. The training during the expedition is meant to refresh and practise skills you already have, not to replace prior mountaineering preparation.
We therefore strongly recommend completing a basic mountaineering course before you join the expedition.
Good to know
- Transfers to Base Camp: Group transfers Osh – Base Camp – Osh run on fixed dates in July and August and start from 5 passengers. When you book, tell us the date of your intended arrival at Lenin Peak Base Camp and the date of your return to Osh. If the fixed transfer dates do not suit you, you can request an individual transfer at an additional charge.
- Luggage: Your luggage can be carried between Base Camp and Camp 1 by horse for an additional fee; porters on the mountain are available at extra cost (see Additional services).
- Rental equipment: Equipment is issued at Achyk-Tash Base Camp and must be reserved in advance; check its availability with the manager.
- Weather and reserve days: Weather in the Pamirs can change quickly, especially above 6,000 m. The summit day depends on the forecast, the team’s acclimatization and mountain conditions, and safety always comes before the summit.

An insurance policy is an obligatory condition for taking part in the expedition to Lenin Peak. It protects you in case of an accident, and the tour operator can only assist with search and rescue operations and medical services if your policy meets these requirements:

- Global Voyager cannot act as the insurer’s assistance company: the tour operator does not work with Global Voyager, and if your insurer’s assistance company is Global Voyager, medical and transportation expenses are borne by you.

Kyrgyzstan travel information
Practical essentials for travelling in Kyrgyzstan. Open a topic to read more.
Visa policy
Find your country from the list and check possible visa requirements for Kyrgyzstan before booking.
The official currency is the Kyrgyz som (KGS). Bishkek has plenty of ATMs, but outside the larger towns and the northern shore of Issyk-Kul cash is how almost everything is paid.
ATMs and cards
Some ATMs in Bishkek dispense US dollars as well as som. Beyond the capital, ATMs are found in the few largest towns but mostly not in smaller ones, except on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul. Mastercard works in all ATMs, but Visa is still the more widely accepted card. Demirbank's red ATMs have lately been the best option for foreign cards, with moderate fees.
Exchanging money
Exchange offices in the major cities change US dollars, euros and roubles into som. Notes must be clean, fresh and without any signs of wear. Exchange offices prefer larger notes from 50 USD and 50 EUR, and sometimes give a better rate for them.
Paying by card
Cards are accepted in major hotels, restaurants, large supermarkets and some museums in Bishkek and Osh, and occasionally even in taxis. Elsewhere, apart from the northern shore of Issyk-Kul, paying by card is not practical.
Kyrgyzstan is generally safe for travellers and tourism is growing fast, but the usual precautions matter.
Documents
Always carry your passport or a notarised copy. Without proper identification you can be detained by the police.
In towns
- Robberies, some of them violent, and thefts happen especially in crowded places such as the bazaars. Take care after dark.
- Sexual harassment has been reported on public transport. Avoid walking or travelling alone, especially at night.
- Book taxis in advance from established services.
- Stay away from crowds and demonstrations.
- Watch where you step: some streets have large holes and pavements are often uneven.
Laws and customs
- Respect local traditions, customs, laws and religious practices.
- Possessing or using narcotics is strictly prohibited.
- Do not photograph anything related to the armed forces or security services.
- Same-sex relationships are legal but not widely discussed or publicly recognised.
Border areas
Smuggling makes the southern border zones with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan unstable and best avoided.
Kyrgyzstan is visa-free for travellers from many countries. Others can apply for an electronic visa or through an embassy.
Visas
For a tourist visa, most passport holders need an invitation letter from a tourism company. Kyrgyzstan has had an electronic visa system since 1 September 2017.
Border regions
Visiting border regions requires a special permit.
The best times to visit Kyrgyzstan's lower areas are May–June and September. In the high mountains, July and August are best.
Lower areas: May–June and September
In late spring and early autumn the valleys, Issyk-Kul's shores and the towns are green or golden, days are pleasant rather than hot and there are fewer visitors.
High mountains: July and August
This is when the high pastures, yurt camps and mountain passes are open, and trekking and horse-riding routes that are under snow the rest of the year can be reached. Days in the valleys can reach about 30°C, and nights at altitude can still be close to freezing. Summer is also the time of festivals celebrating Kyrgyz traditions.
Winter
Winters in the highlands are long and close the high passes, but it is still a captivating season. Hiking, horse riding and skiing are all possible, and yurt stays are available too.
Healthcare in Kyrgyzstan is basic and medical facilities are scarce, so comprehensive medical and travel insurance is essential.
Medicines
If you rely on regular medication, bring enough for the whole trip: it can be hard or expensive to find locally.
Insurance
Arrange comprehensive medical and travel insurance before you arrive. A serious accident or illness may mean emergency air evacuation to a neighbouring country.
Food and water
Treat tap water and other local water as contaminated and boil it before drinking; bottled water is the safest choice throughout your stay. Be careful with unpasteurised dairy and other animal products.
Vaccinations
Vaccinations against polio and tuberculosis are recommended before entering the country, and others may also be advisable. Ask your doctor or travel clinic.
