Kyrgyzstan border permit

Some areas of Kyrgyzstan along the border with China, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and even Kazakhstan have been considered ‘sensitive’ by the government of Kyrgyzstan. A special border permit is therefore required to visit them even for the shepherds and residents staying next to the border villages. The procedure of obtaining a border permit takes 14 days by minimum but it is better to apply for the permit already about a month before the journey to the border zone. You do not need to know the exact dates when entering a border zone as the permit can be issued for a month.

Many of the most beautiful places in Kyrgyzstan are located within these border zones. Although according to our experience you may need to go through some bureaucratic procedures. To get to those places you need to cross the military checkpoints show your border permit and pass further. Border Zones of Kyrgyzstan

The border zones that require the border permit for visiting are divided into different regions of Kyrgyzstan as followed. Below we have also mentioned which sights & destinations require the Kyrgyz border permit to enter.

Issyk-Kul region
Karkyra valley, Enilchek town, Inylchek glacier, Ak-Shyirak village, Karasay checkpoint, Echikilitash checkpoint, Sary-Jaz mountains range, Khan-Tengri National Park

Naryn region
Kel-Suu lake, Chatyr-Kol lake, Aksay valley, Arpa valley, Torugart checkpoint

Osh region
Lenin base camp, Irkeshtam check point, Bor-Dobo check point (To enter Pamir)

Chui region
Chong Kemin valley if you intend to head into a 2km-wide border strip from Khan Tengri and Pik Maxim Gorki in the east to Peak Kantbastau and onwards to Korumbash pass in the west. An undefined part of Kemin district is also in the border zone.

Batken region
Kadamjay district *Leylek and Batken districts are currently not included (Karavshin gorge is not accessible at the moment)

Validity of the Kyrgyz border permit

The permit can be issued for a month (or 2 months as an option with extra cost)

Entering a Kyrgyz border zone

When entering a border zone, you must pass a check point guarded by Kyrgyz military. In order to pass the border zone check point, you have to take with you:

The border permit itself
The passport (not a copy) upon which the permit has been issued (same passport number)
