TOUR ITINEARY
Arrive in Dushanbe and enjoy a tour of the capital city of Tajikistan. Begin by visiting the Museum of Antiquities, which holds an excellent archaeological collection of the region, followed by a visit to the vibrant and colorful local bazaar. Later, head out of Dushanbe to explore the Hissar Fortress before returning to see the city’s main square. Overnight at the hotel.
Depart for Iskanderkul Lake, considered one of the most beautiful lakes of the former Soviet Union. After exploring the lake, continue to the picturesque village of Saritag, where you can take a leisurely walk. Overnight at an alpine camp.
Leave Saritag and travel to Sarazm, one of the earliest settlements in the region, dating back to 4000 BC. Continue to the ancient Sogdian site of Penjikent, often referred to as the “Pompeii of Central Asia” due to its stunning frescoes. Overnight at a hotel in Penjikent.
After breakfast, visit the archaeological site of Mughtepa, an ancient city from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Continue towards Artouch, passing through the 5,300-meter-long Shakhristan Tunnel. En route, visit the ancient Sogdian city of Bunjikath, built between the 5th and 7th centuries AD, and Chilhudjra Garrison. After lunch, travel along the Zerafshan River to reach Artouch at 2,200 meters above sea level. Overnight in alpine camp cottages.
After breakfast, embark on a hike passing through the Artouch-Koulikalon Pass to reach the Koulikalon Lakes, famous for their sparkling, multicolored reflections. Enjoy a picnic by the lake with a stunning view of the Koulikalon Mountain range, including peaks like Mirali (5,120 m), Maria (4,970 m), and Adamtash (4,700 m). Overnight in tents.
Descend towards Artouch and depart for Khodjand. On the way, stop at Istaravshan, one of the oldest cities in Tajikistan, dating back over 2,500 years. Explore the famous fort, madrassahs, and the colorful local bazaar before continuing to Khodjand.
Spend the day exploring Khujand, including the 16th-century Shaikh Muslihiddin Mosque, the lively Payshanba Bazaar (the largest in Tajikistan), and the fascinating archaeological museum. Conclude with a visit to the Soviet-era hydroelectric power station at the “Sea of Tajikistan.” Transfer to the border and spend the night at a hotel.
