Derbent Canyon: A Natural Marvel Near Boysun
Derbent Canyon is a stunning natural landmark located south of Boysun in Uzbekistan. The name “Derbent” means “Closed Gates” or “Narrow Passage.” This impressive gorge extends for 7-8 kilometers, with steep mountain slopes rising as high as 400 meters. The last two kilometers are so narrow that sunlight only reaches the bottom at noon. Derbent Canyon is easily accessible by car via a well-maintained asphalt road, situated just 30 kilometers from Boysun.
The name of Derbent village, standing at the canyon mouth. For many years, the place served as the most passable trade route from Samarkand and Bukhara to Termez and further to the Pamirs and to India. However, most had to travel another route through the canyon further west of the village where a fortress outpost was set at the entrance. Caravans going by the Silk Road from places such as India, China, Persia, and even Spain had to pay their way through it, and the area received the nickname “Iron Gate.”
According to legend, the nearby “Sogdian Rock” served as a refuge for the family of Roxana, the future wife of Alexander the Great, during the siege. Derbent Canyon is a revered pilgrimage site for locals, who visit to venerate the sacred spring and the tomb of Saint Khujamoy-ota. The site is particularly crowded during the Kurban-Hait festival, as it is believed that the saint’s prayers can help the Almighty recognize one’s good deeds more swiftly.
