KYRGYZSTAN CULTURE TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

This tour will show you the most known Kyrgyz destinations and focus largely on the cultural activities  available along the itinerary. You will start with the beautiful Issyk Kul lake and its many mountain valleys surrounding the lake that offer unique sights. Issyk Kul is a great start that will help you to adapt to the higher altitudes and prepare you for even more stunning sights in the Naryn regions and the Son Kul lake at 3016 meters above the sea level.

During this tour, you will sleep in yurts, see the eagle hunter in action with his bird, get a glimpse of the silk road history and the current nomad life of Kyrgyzstan. You will also see how the yurts are being produced as there is a stable demand for them by the nomads herding their animals in the mountain pastures during the summers.

Issyk Kul Kyrgyzstan

Breakfast at the hotel.

The day begins with a visit to Burana Tower, an ancient minaret in the Chuy Valley in northern Kyrgyzstan. Explore the tower, funerary monuments, earthworks, remains of the castle, and three mausoleums—the only remnants of the ancient town of Balasagyn, founded by the Karakhanids at the end of the 9th century.

Enjoy lunch in Iskra village with a Dungan family, a Chinese Muslim ethnic group who settled in Kyrgyzstan. Sample their traditional cuisine.

Continue to Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan’s largest lake and one of the deepest in the world. Check in at your hotel located on the lake shore.

Your first stop at Issyk-Kul is the Petroglyph Museum, a 42-hectare open-air site featuring stones, tombs, balbals, and petroglyphs dating from the 2nd millennium BC to the 4th century AD.

Enjoy free time to relax on the beach or swim in the lake.

Dinner at the restaurant.

Jeti Oguz valley seven bulls rock formations in Issyk Kul

After breakfast, we set off from Karakol toward the breathtaking Jeti Oguz Gorge, where nature greets us with the striking red cliffs of the famous “Broken Heart.” Standing at the entrance to the gorge, this dramatic rock formation sets a romantic and mysterious tone for our visit. We’ll enjoy a leisurely hour-long walk, surrounded by fresh mountain air and sweeping views.

Our journey continues to the scenic Barskoon Gorge, a place celebrated for its cascading waterfalls. Among them, the enchanting “Tears of the Snow Leopard” captures both beauty and legend. Midway through the gorge, we’ll come across a unique monument dedicated to Yuri A. Gagarin, the world’s first cosmonaut, standing proudly amid the rugged landscape.

Dinner and overnight in the guesthouse.

Meals included: breakfast, dinner

Skazka Canyon, Fairytale Canyon near Issyk Kul in Kyrgyzstan

After breakfast, we head towards Kochkor village and pass by the south shore of the lake. On the road we visit the Skazka canyons which translate as the “Fairy Tale”. Here you can find objects of surprising shapes and sizes. A real skyscraper or an animal can appear in front of you.

Next, we meet an eagle hunter with his bird. You can appreciate the alertness and speed of the bird during the hunting. It is one of the oldest traditions of Kyrgyz nomads.

Lunch in the guesthouse or café.

Our next stop is Kyzyl Tuu village where the local family reveals the secrets of yurt production. This family is engaged in this unique art from generation to generation.

Continue to Kochkor. Dinner and overnight in the guesthouse.

Sunset over yurt village in Song Kul

Departures Summer (May – September): From Kochkor to Son-Kul

After breakfast, we journey along winding mountain roads, climbing higher into the heart of Kyrgyzstan’s wild beauty until we reach the Kalmak Ashu Pass (3,447 m). From this lofty vantage point, Son-Kul Lake shimmers in the distance, appearing like a small turquoise jewel set in the vast highland plains.

As we descend toward the lake, its true grandeur unfolds — an expansive, dazzling mirror of sky surrounded by rolling green pastures. Upon arrival at our yurt camp, we are welcomed with the warmth and hospitality of the nomads, discovering their centuries-old traditions, way of life, and deep connection to the land. In the evening, we share a hearty dinner before spending the night in authentic yurts under a sky thick with stars.

Departures Spring & Fall (March, April, October, November): From Kochkor to Tash Rabat

Our goal is to reach the caravanserai Tash Rabat, overcoming the Dolon Pass at 3,030 meters above sea level.

Tash Rabat is a historical monument founded by monks in the 10th century. During the Silk Road era, it lost its religious significance and served as a stopover for caravans and travelers.

  • Lunch: Restaurant in Naryn
  • Dinner: Yurt camp in Tash Rabat

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Yurt camp (4 people per yurt; toilets, shower, and sauna are outside)

Spend the morning soaking in the beauty of the surrounding nature. We then set out for the scenic Chon-Kemin Valley, with a stop in the charming village of Kochkor.

Here, we explore the rich tradition of felt-making, an art deeply woven into Kyrgyz culture. Guided by skilled local artisans, we take part in a hands-on workshop, crafting our own miniature ala-kiyiz — the colorful, patterned felt carpet beloved by nomads for generations.

You may also opt for a leisurely stroll through the tranquil village, surrounded by sweeping mountain views. Later, enjoy a freshly prepared traditional dinner, the perfect ending to a day full of culture and natural beauty.
