- Begin your journey early in the morning from Bishkek. The first stop is the Burana Tower, an ancient minaret dating back to the 11th century, located near the town of Tokmok. The tower is part of the ruins of the Balasagun city, once a major center along the Silk Road. Explore the site, climb to the top of the tower for panoramic views, and admire the nearby ancient balbals (stone statues).
- Continue your drive to Iskra village, home to a Dungan community, a Muslim Chinese ethnic group. A Dungan family will welcome you into their home for an authentic, homemade lunch. Enjoy the warmth of hospitality, learn about Dungan traditions, and experience the fusion of Chinese and Central Asian flavors.
- After lunch, head towards the Kok-Moinok Canyons, located near the Kyzart Valley. The canyons are known for their dramatic, colorful rock formations, offering a perfect opportunity for a short hike or exploration.
- Arrive in Kyzart village by the late afternoon. Kyzart is a small, picturesque village that offers a glimpse into the life of local Kyrgyz people. You can explore the village, meet local families, and learn about their daily activities
- The evening will offer a true taste of Kyrgyz hospitality, with a traditional Kyrgyz dinner.

- Begin your day early in Kyzart for the snowy horse riding to Song-Kol Lake. As you leave Kyzart, you will head towards the Chaar-Archa River. Upon arrival, you will meet your horses and local guide. The guide will brief you on safety, riding techniques, and what to expect during the ride.
- Mount your horse and ride through snow-covered meadows, ascending towards Tuz-Ashuu Pass. Enjoy the quiet, snowy landscape as you approach the pass at an altitude of 3,300 m.
- Upon reaching the pass, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of Song-Kol Lake, frozen and stretching out as far as the eye can see. On the other side, the Kilemche Valley lies below, with its snow-covered slopes and vast open spaces. At this point, you’ll stop to enjoy a warm picnic.
- After the picnic and a relaxing break, you will ride back down to the starting point near Chaar-Archa River. The descent is smooth, and the view of the valley below offers a new perspective of the landscape.
- Once you’ve reached the starting point, you’ll dismount and return the horses to their caretakers. Then, it’s time for the ride back to Kyzart village. Arrive in Kyzart and enjoy a hot cup of tea to warm up and relax after the ride.
- Enjoy a hearty Kyrgyz dinner, and rest in your cozy guesthouse for the night.

- After an early departure, you’ll head towards Ysyk-Kol Lake, often referred to as the “Pearl of Central Asia”. The lake’s turquoise waters and the surrounding Tian Shan Mountains create a stunning backdrop for your visit.
- After lunch in Kochkor village, the trip continues towards Bokonbaev Village, situated along the northern shore of Ysyk-Kol Lake. On the way, you’ll visit Ak-Say Canyons, a striking and colorful landscape known for its unique rock formations and vibrant hues.
- Once in Bokonbaev Village, you’ll have the incredible opportunity to witness a traditional eagle hunting demonstration by local eagle hunters. The demonstration offers a rare glimpse into this ancient Kyrgyz tradition, where trained golden eagles are used to hunt small game like hares and foxes. You’ll learn about the history and techniques of eagle hunting, and watch these majestic birds perform impressive feats as they soar through the sky.
- After the eagle hunting demonstration, you’ll check-in to a cozy yurt in by Ysyk-Kol Lake where a traditional Kyrgyz dinner awaits.

- Begin your day with a drive towards the Fairy Tale Canyons, a fascinating natural attraction known for its surreal, vibrant sandstone formations. Take a short hike through the canyons to fully appreciate the rock formations. It’s a good place to take photos.
- Enjoy the traditional Russian lunch in Tamga village from the local Russian family.
- Head to Barskoon Gorge, which is known for its stunning views and the impressive Barskoon Waterfalls. The drive to the gorge takes you through picturesque mountain roads, with the towering peaks of the Terskey Alatau mountain range in the background. Walk along the gorge and enjoy the waterfalls. You can take a peaceful moment by the water, relax, and enjoy the quiet beauty of the area.
- From Barskoon Gorge, drive towards Jety-Oguz, famous for its red rock formations and stunning landscapes. The Jety-Oguz Red Mountains are one of Kyrgyzstan’s most recognizable natural landmarks, with red sandstone cliffs that create a striking contrast with the green valleys
- Arrive in Karakol by late afternoon or early evening, where you can relax and unwind after a day of exploring the natural beauty of the region. Top of the day with a delightful taste of traditional Kyrgyz cuisine at top-ranked restaurant Dastorkon.

- Once aboard the UAZ this morning, you’ll begin your journey, leaving Karakol behind and heading into the heart of the Terskey Alatau mountains – Altyn-Arashan gorge. The Soviet UAZ (well known as a “loaf”), with its classic, somewhat bouncy ride, makes the journey even more memorable as it handles the rough path with ease.
- After about 2 hours of driving, you’ll arrive at Altyn- Arashan, a serene valley known for its natural hot springs and jaw-dropping mountain views.
- Once you arrive, it’s time to relax and enjoy a hearty meal in a local guesthouse. After lunch, the highlight of the trip awaits: the chance to bathe in the hot springs of Altyn- Arashan. These natural, mineral-rich thermal waters are known for their healing properties and are a perfect way to relax after your off-road journey.
- After enjoying the hot springs and the beauty of Altyn- Arashan, it’s time to head back. The drive back to Karakol in the UAZ will be just as adventurous as the ride in, giving you another chance to experience the charm and character of the Soviet vehicle.
- Upon arrival back in Karakol, your day of adventure concludes with a delightful dinner at one of the local restaurants.

- On your final day in Kyrgyzstan, begin your journey from Karakol to Bishkek with an early departure. The drive takes you along the northern shore of Ysyk-Kol Lake, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the lake’s sparkling waters on one side and the towering Kungey-Ala-Too Mountain range on the other.
- Along the way, take a short optional stop at Kyrchyn Valley, the historic site of the World Nomad Games.
- After lunch in Cholpon-Ata city, continue your drive towards Bishkek. Upon arrival, head straight to Osh Bazaar, one of the largest and most vibrant markets in the city. This lively bazaar offers a wide variety of goods, from fresh produce and spices to traditional Kyrgyz handicrafts and textiles. It’s the perfect place to pick up last-minute souvenirs and experience the bustling atmosphere of local life.
- Conclude your trip with a farewell dinner with your guide at a local restaurant. Enjoy traditional Kyrgyz cuisine while reflecting on your incredible journey, sharing stories and experiences with your guide and fellow travelers. This dinner marks the end of your adventure through Kyrgyzstan’s mountains, valleys, and cultural landmarks.

The official currency is the Kyrgyz som (KGS). In the capital, Bishkek, an abundance of ATMs can be found, some of which dispense US dollars in addition to local soms. Beyond the city limits, ATMs are increasingly prevalent in few largest towns but are mostly not available in smaller towns except at the northern shore of Issyk Kul.
Mastercard is universally accepted at all ATMs but Visa is still the more widely accepted card of choice in Kyrgyzstan. Maestro or other cards might be accepted in few select machines. Demirbank with their red colored ATMs has been the best option lately for all foreign cards with moderate fees.
Currency exchange services are readily accessible in major cities, ensuring seamless exchange of rubles, US dollars, and euros into soms. It is imperative that foreign currency banknotes remain pristine, fresh, and devoid of any signs of wear. Larger banknotes from 50 USD and 50 EUR are favored by the cash exchange services and are sometimes the prerequisite for a better exchange rate.
While credit cards face limited acceptance nationwide the convenience of utilizing debit or credit cards extends to major hotels, restaurants, expansive supermarkets, and selected museums in Bishkek and Osh and rarely even in taxis. However, outside these two prominent cities and Northern Shore of Issyk Kul, the practicality of card payments remains unfeasible.

Kyrgyzstan is generally considered safe for travelers, but adherence to standard precautions is crucial. The country is experiencing an active surge in tourism. Key recommendations encompass:
- Always have your passport or a notarized copy with you, as lacking proper identification may lead to arrest by the police.
- Incidents of robberies, some of which can be violent, and thefts are commonplace especially in crowded places like the bazars. Caution is advised, particularly when venturing out after dark. Instances of sexual violence and harassment have been reported in public transportation.
- Steer clear of crowds and demonstrations to ensure personal safety.
- Show respect for local traditions, customs, laws, and religious practices at all times.
- The possession or use of narcotics is strictly prohibited.
- Photography of anything related to the armed forces or security services is not allowed.
- While same-sex relationships are legal, they are not widely discussed and lack public recognition.
- Avoid solitary walks or travels, especially during nighttime.
- Utilize established taxi services in advance to ensure reliability.
- The southern regions are susceptible to smuggling activities, rendering the security situation unstable and hazardous along the southern border zones with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
- Mind where you step in the cities as there are sometimes large holes on the streets and the pavements are not in pristine condition on the pedestrian areas.

Kyrgyzstan extends a visa-free arrangement to travelers from 69 countries. Alternatively, others can opt for the electronic visa system or submit applications through the embassy. Comprehensive information about visas is available here. For a tourist visa in Kyrgyzstan, a majority of passport holders require an invitation letter from a tourism company. Since September 1, 2017, Kyrgyzstan has introduced an electronic visa system. Special authorization is mandated for visits to border regions in Kyrgyzstan.

The optimal time to experience Kyrgyzstan is during the summer months of July and August. Despite the temperatures reaching approximately 30°C, this period witnesses the liveliest bazaars in the country. It is also the perfect season to delve into the mountainous landscapes and trekking routes that may be inaccessible during other times of the year. In July and August, you have the opportunity to explore Kyrgyzstan’s mountains either on foot or horseback, immersing yourself in traditional yurt accommodations with local families. Additionally, this time of the year hosts annual festivals celebrating Kyrgyz traditions.
While the winters in the highlands are prolonged, limiting passage through the elevated mountain passes, it presents a captivating season for exploring Kyrgyzstan. Engaging in various activities, akin to those enjoyed in summer (with the exception of rafting), such as hiking, horseback riding, or skiing in the mountains, allows for a unique experience. Accommodations in traditional yurts are also available during this season.

The overall state of healthcare in this country is recognized as relatively subpar, prompting a strong recommendation for travelers reliant on regular medications to carry ample supplies. Locating necessary drugs locally might pose challenges or incur significant costs. Medical facilities are anticipated to be scarce, underscoring the importance of securing comprehensive medical and travel insurance prior to arrival. In the event of a serious accident or illness, emergency air evacuation to a neighboring country may be necessary.
It is imperative to treat tap water and other local water sources as contaminated, necessitating thorough boiling before consumption. Opting for bottled water throughout the entire duration of stay in the country is a prudent choice. Exercise particular caution when consuming unpasteurized dairy products or animal products that may be susceptible to contamination.
Before entering the country, obtaining additional vaccinations against polio and tuberculosis is recommended, and other vaccinations may also be deemed necessary. Malaria poses a risk in the country, predominantly in the southern regions.
