The largest amount of waterfalls in Central Asia are found in Kyrgyzstan. Also the Central Asia’s largest waterfalls are located in Kyrgyzstan. The best way to see these wonders of the nature are as a part of our Central Asia Tours.
Kyrgyzstan waterfalls
Kyrgyzstan has a countless number of waterfalls. Some are almost impossible to reach but there are also plenty that can be easily or relatively easily reached that we focus on below. Many of the Kyrgyzstan waterfalls mentioned here are also included in our Kyrgyzstan Tours.
Shar cascade waterfall
Shar (or Shaar) Waterfall is the tallest in Central Asia with the staggering height of more than 400 meters! It’s height is hard to comprehend without wandering just below it as the surrounding cliffs of the At Bashi mountain range are also huge in size. The waterfall can only be reached by horseback or hiking. The path is not suited for first time riders but the ones that have already a bit of experience can manage the rocky and hilly paths well. Barskoon waterfalls
Barskoon waterfalls are a chain of waterfalls in the Barskoon valley, at the southern shore of Issyk Kul. The third waterfall in Barskoon is expeptionally beautiful but climbing there requires a bit of fitness and you cannot have any problems with your legs as the path up is steep and sometimes also slippery. The first and second waterfalls of the Barskoon chain are easier to reach and the first one can be even ridden to. The autumn colors that start in September make these waterfalls even more spectacular.
Arslanbob waterfalls
Arslanbob village area has two beautiful waterfalls that are easily reached. They are named simply the small waterfall and the large waterfall. The small one is inside the village and has a cave next to it. The large waterfall does not have more water compared to the small one but it is considerably taller. It can be reached with the help of local Soviet cars that transfer people there constantly from the village main square. The best views are after a short climb through dilapidated stony stairs.
Son Kul waterfall
Son Kul waterfall is rarely visited as it is a bit hidden inside a gorge. It is located just next to the first curve of the 33 parrots serpentine road leading to Son Kul lake, one of the most visited destinations of all Kyrgyzstan. One only needs to walk few hunded meters along a path to the waterfall. The Son kul waterfall is not that high but the amount of water is abundant as all the water leaving the lake and its large catchment area come through here.
Jeti Oguz waterfall
The Jeti Oguz Waterfall is a scenic natural attraction located in the Jeti Oguz valley in the Issyk-Kul Region of Kyrgyzstan. The area at the mouth of the valley is famous for its red rock formations and lush green landscapes, and the waterfall is one of several hidden gems in the region. Jeti Oguz lies about 28 kilometers west of Karakol, a major town on the eastern shores of Lake Issyk Kul. The gorge itself is part of the northern slopes of the Terskey Alatau Range, a subsection of the Tien Shan Mountains.
The Jeti-Oguz Waterfall is relatively small compared to many other waterfalls in Kyrgyzstan, with a drop of approximately 30 meters. However, its beauty lies in the surrounding picturesque landscape and how the water flows down along the rocky surface creating an endless amount of small cascades. The waterfall is fed by a mountain stream that originates from melting glaciers in the Terskey Alatau Mountains and is called the Maiden’s tears.
Ak Sai waterfall (Ala Archa waterfall)
Ak-Sai Waterfall (Ala Archa waterfall) is a natural attraction located within Ala-Archa National Park just south of Bishkek. Known for its alpine beauty and somewhat challenging hike, the Ak-Sai Waterfall is a popular destination for adventurers and nature enthusiasts. The waterfall is located within the Ak-Sai Gorge, one of the main gorges in Ala-Archa National Park. The park itself lies in the Tien Shan Mountains, renowned for their rugged peaks, glaciers, and deep valleys. To reach the Ak-Sai Waterfall, visitors must follow a moderately difficult hiking trail starting from the Ala-Archa base camp. The trail passes through scenic landscapes of rocky paths, alpine meadows, and views of the surrounding mountain ranges.
The Ak-Sai Waterfall has an approximate drop of 35 meters (115 feet) at the height of about 2700 m above the sea level. It’s fed by the melting glaciers of the Tien Shan Mountains, which give the waterfall a powerful and refreshing flow, especially in the summer months when snow and ice are melting.
Alamedin waterfall
Alamedin valley is one of the easy access mountain valleys near Bishkek. At the entrance of the the walley you will find Soviet era hot spring sanatoriums but if you venture somewhat further the views start to get a lot better and you can also find the Alamedin (or Teke Tor) waterfall after a hike. This waterfall can also be reached during the winter time although it is mostly frozen until spring. Alamedin is also a great day trip destination from Bishkek.
Chichkan/Itagar waterfall
Itagar waterfall is a bit hidden and unknown so it is still definitely off the beaten path. Walking westwards in the Itagar valley, originating from the Chychkan gorge between Bishkek and Osh, you can reach a marvelous and powerful 8-meter waterfall called Itagar. The waterfall is quite high at the mountain side, and can be seen already from afar but luckily the walk is not very steep.
Along the Chyckan gorge, there are also numerous other streams enhancing the Chychkan river coming from the glaciers in the surrounding mountains along their own gorges and also some spectacular swimming places if you are not afraid of the chilly waters.
Sokuluk (Belogorka) waterfall
Sokuluk Waterfall is located about 50 km (31 miles) southwest of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital. It is not the most magnificent of the hundreds of Kyrgyz waterfalls, but it is a great day trip from Bishkek and is nevertheless about 60 m tall and located in a beautiful landscape, especially during the spring time. Once you reach the end of the drivable road, there’s a short hike of around 1 to 3 hours to reach the waterfall while the hike is moderate in difficulty, with some rocky terrain and gentle uphill climbs, so proper hiking footwear is recommended.
Pigeon waterfall (Chunkurchak)
The waterfall, known by locals as “Pigeon Waterfall,” (Or Golubniyy / blue waterfall) falls from a height of 26 meters between two sheer cliffs. In the summer, you can see flocks of wild pigeons here, giving this place a special atmosphere. Walking along Chunkurchak the gorge, you can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscape. In early spring, Chunkurchak becomes even more beautiful when the mountain tulips bloom. There is also a rope bridge over a gorge near the Pigeon waterfall and a platform for kind of bungee jumping.
Abshir Ata waterfall
Abshir Ata Waterfall is a unique waterfall in Southern Kyrgyzstan, located in the Abshir Valley in the Osh Region, in the southern part of the country on and reached through the road leading to Batken. This waterfall stands out not only for its beauty but also for its unusual origin and cultural significance. The waterfall is situated about 70 kilometers east of Osh, the second largest city in Kyrgyzstan.
The Abshir Ata Waterfall is unique because it emerges directly from the rock face of a cliff in a gorge with almost vertical walls on both sides. Unlike typical waterfalls that flow over the edge of cliffs, this one springs out from a hole in the rock, making it appear as though the water is erupting from the mountain itself. The waterfall has a drop of about 10 meters and there are stairs built right next to it and the area has also a lot of other facilities related to the site being a pilgrimage destination for many locals. While not particularly tall, the way the water gushes from the cliffside makes it a striking sight. The water that feeds the waterfall is fresh and cold, originating from an underground spring inside the mountain.
Kazakhstan waterfalls
In Kazakhstan the waterfalls are concentrated in the Tien Shan mountain area near Almaty. Another region of waterfalls is in the very eastern part of the coutry, where the Altai mountains start to rise from the steppe. Turgen waterfalls
Turgen Waterfalls are a popular natural attraction located in the Turgen Gorge in southeastern Kazakhstan, about 70 km (43 miles) east of Almaty. The gorge is part of the Ile-Alatau National Park and is known for its stunning scenery, including waterfalls, forests, alpine meadows, and wildlife. The Turgen Gorge has several waterfalls, but the two most famous ones are Bear (Medvezhiy) Waterfall and Kairak Waterfall. The Turgen Waterfalls are an easy and rewarding escape into nature from Almaty, offering both quick visits to Bear Waterfall for those looking for a relaxed outing and more adventurous treks to Kairak Waterfall for hiking enthusiasts.
Burkhan Bulak waterfall
Burkhan Bulak Waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Kazakhstan and one of the most stunning natural attractions of the country but not the easiest to reach. Nestled in the Jungar Alatau Mountains (also spelled as Dzungarian Alatau), it cascades down several tiers in a remote and beautiful region of southeastern Kazakhstan, close to the border with China. The total height of Burkhan Bulak Waterfall is approximately 168 meters (551 feet), making it the tallest waterfall in Kazakhstan. The waterfall descends over four cascades, with the highest single drop being about 114 meters (374 feet). The area is known for its alpine scenery, including deep gorges, dense forests, and rugged peaks. The waterfall itself is situated at an altitude of about 2000 meters (6,562 feet) and requires a five hour drive from Tekeli village and a 2-3 hour hike.
Gorelnik waterfalls
The Gorelnik Waterfall is a beautiful natural feature located in the Ile-Alatau National Park, just outside Almaty, Kazakhstan. It’s one of the most popular and easiest waterfall hiking destinations in the area, offering scenic views of waterfalls, alpine meadows, and mountainous terrain. The hike to Gorelnik Waterfall is moderately challenging, but it rewards visitors with stunning views of cascading water and the surrounding nature of the Tien Shan Mountains.
The main Gorelnik Waterfall drops approximately 10 meters (33 feet), with smaller cascades above and below the main fall. The waterfall is located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the center of Almaty, making it a convenient day trip for both locals and tourists as it takes only about 30 to 40 minutes by car to reach the trailhead from Almaty. The hike to Gorelnik Waterfall is a moderate trek that takes about 1.5 to 2 hours one way. The trail is well-marked and gradually ascends through the forested Gorelnik Gorge.
Butakov waterfalls
Butakov Waterfall is a picturesque and easily accessible natural attraction located in the Ile-Alatau National Park, just outside Almaty. This beautiful waterfall is a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking a short, scenic hike with views of the surrounding mountains and forests. It’s a great spot for those who want to experience Kazakhstan’s natural beauty without venturing too far from the city. Butakovskiy Waterfall is about 20 meters (65 feet) tall, and while not the largest in Kazakhstan, it is appreciated for its scenic beauty and peaceful surroundings. The waterfall is located in the Butakovka Gorge, which is known for its lush greenery, alpine meadows, and pine forests, with the waterfall being one of its main highlights.
The waterfall is located about 25 km (15 miles) from the center of Almaty, making it an easy half-day or full-day trip as it takes only about 40 to 50 minutes by car to reach the starting point of the hike in the Butakovka Gorge.
Kock Kol waterfall
The Kock kol (or Kok Kol) Waterfall is a magically beautiful creation of nature, the largest of the waterfalls in Kazakh (and all of) Altai by volume which is far away from the areas commonly visited by tourists. The waterfall is about 80 m high and has a steepness of about 60-70°. A water stream over 10 m wide cascades down the wall of the Berel spur with a deafening roar that can be heard far away. When falling from a great height, fine water dust is formed, ionizing the air in the valley.
On sunny days, the waterfall is painted in all the colors of the rainbow. A powerful waterfall, a picturesque gorge covered with beautiful cedar and spruce forest, give extraordinary beauty and charm to this corner of Altai nature. Its location near the Lower Camp on the way to the foot of the legendary Belukha makes it even more interesting to visit.

Uzbekistan waterfalls
In Uzbekistan the waterfalls are found mostly in the eastern part of the country where the Tien Shan mountains slowly turn into deserts where only the rivers the only source of greenery. Many of the Uzbek waterfalls can be found east from Tashkent and some more in the southeastern part of the country. Few of the waterfalls mentioned below are also included in our Uzbekistan Tours.
Sangardak waterfall
Sargandak waterfall is an about 20 meter tall waterfall in the Termez region of Uzbekistan that spreads into several small flows and is very beautiful. It is also very popular among the Uzbeks and can get crowded during the hottest summer season.
Tavaksai Waterfalls
Tavaksai waterfalls are a great day trip from Tashkent. There are several waterfalls on the smallish river in the valley with the largest ones at the end of the journey. The path to along the river is good and it is one of the easiest way to enjoy Uzbek nature during a day trip from Tashkent.
Suvtushar waterfall
The Suvtushar Waterfall is a beautiful natural attraction located in the Namangan Region of Fergana Valley. It is one of the lesser-known but increasingly popular spots for both locals and tourists seeking scenic landscapes and adventure in the mountains. Suvtushar Waterfall is recognized for its cascade, serene surroundings, and relatively remote location, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers.
Height: The Suvtushar Waterfall is approximately 30 meters (98 feet) high. The waterfall has a powerful flow, especially in the spring and early summer when the melting snow from the surrounding mountains feeds the river. The water plunges down a rocky cliff into a clear pool below, creating a mesmerizing sight with the sound of rushing water echoing through the gorge. After reaching the village of Tergachi, visitors must hike to the waterfall. The hike is moderate and takes about 30 to 45 minutes, passing through mountain trails, green valleys, and rocky terrain. The hike is accessible to most visitors with a reasonable level of fitness.
Aksarsay waterfall
Aksarsay is a small waterfall in the Chimgan Charvak area near Tashkent, within the foothills of the Western Tian Shan Mountains. Although not as widely known as some other waterfalls in Central Asia, Aksarsay is a hidden gem that offers beautiful views and a serene atmosphere for nature lovers and hikers.
After reaching the Chimgan or Charvak area, visitors need to hike to reach Aksarsay Waterfall. The hike to the waterfall is moderate in difficulty and takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the trail and starting point.

Paltau waterfall
Paltau waterfall is also in the Charvak region, east from the reservoir. Paltau waterfall rushes down from a height of 38 meters. Before you get to the waterfall, the road will lead first to the Obi-Rahmat cave, where a site of prehistoric Neanderthal people of the Paleolithic era was discovered.
Tajikistan waterfalls
Tajikistan has lots of mountains and water from the glaciers but the waterfalls with reasonable access are surprisingly scarce. When driving around the country, for example in the Pamir, one can spot many waterfalls far away or in unsafe locations but we will not be listing them here.
Iskanderkul waterfall
Iskanderkul waterfall is the easiest to access in Tajikistan and should be visited while in Iskanderkul lake. There is a clear path leading northeast from the lake and a viewing platform that allows to have a better look at the waterfall as without it is a bit hidden inside the gorge. It is possible to climb higher to get a better view but it is not considered safe. Iskander Kul waterfall is often referred to also as the waterfall of Fann mountains. The waterfall is powerful and the color of the water is very beautiful.
Adzhuk waterfall

Sari Khosor waterfall
From a height of 50 meters, the cascade of Sari Khosor waterfalls crashes down, scattering around him millions of splashes shimmering on the sun with all colors of the rainbow. The waterfall is located in the Vakhsh mountain range in the upstream of the river Surkhob, approximately at the height of 1500 meters above the sea level. This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls of Tajikistan.
Gusgarf waterfall
Gusgarf can be reached by driving about 25 km north from Dushanbe and cross the Varzob river and drive through the Gusgarf village, all the way almost till the end of the village, from where the path to the waterfall starts. The path goes first steeply and is easy to follow in the beginning but after the turn to the north, to the gorge where the waterfall is located, the path is not very clear in every location and it is easy to lose it and get lost in the areas with the steep hills populated by spiky bushes. Therefore, Gusgarf is best visited accompanied by a local guide who knows the path all the way to the waterfall. The waterfall has most water in the spring time and later in the summer the amount of water gets lower making Gusgarf a lesser sight.
Turkmenistan waterfalls
Turkmenistan has by far the smallest amount of recognizable waterfalls from the Central Asian countries. The waterfalls of Turkmenistan focus in the southernwestern area at the border of Iran and on the other hand in the very east, at the most western parts of the Gissar range called the Koytendag mountains and the Kugitang nature reserve.
Umbar waterfall
Umbar waterfall is the 2nd largest and the most known waterfall in Turkmenistan with the height of 27 meters which in the context of Central Asia is not much. This waterfall is hidden inside a narrow gorge or canyon where the river continues to flow after the waterfall nearby the village of Hojapil. Umbar waterfall is fed by snowmelt and rain meaning that the best season is the early summer as the waterfall usually dries up in September and the amount of water decreases already in August.
Koshtemir waterfall
Kohstemir (or Gochdemir) is located in the Sumbar valley. The river forming the waterfall has actually several waterfalls but this one is the most magnificent. Koshtemir waterfall features a wide area of flowing water falling to a lower area but it is a seasonal one, not always having water during the dry summer period.
Kur Khuri waterfall
The tallest waterfall in Turkmenistan is Khur-Khuri on the Kopetdag ridge near the village of Nokhur. Kur Khuri waterfall is a cascade waterfall with the height of about 30 meters.
